The winner of Kelly Kilmer’s two classes are Merkusje and Elli M.    Congratulations to all the winners this week!!  It has been fun, and I am so very grateful to all the artists who donated their classes.  This was a big success and I hope that it helped a lot of people learn about this site.   Please don’t stop sharing the link with anyone that likes to take online classes.

Thank you everyone who came by and left comments and shared links.

First I want to tell you that I have had so much fun with these giveaways.  The artists have been so generous with all the classes they have given away.  I hope after you winners finish your classes, that you will come back to Creativity Classes and leave reviews of the class you took.

Today, our last day, we have another Double Giveaway!  Kelly Kilmer is giving away Memories and Reflections  and  A Life Made By Hand

Memories and Reflections

Click the image to read about this class

Class starts July 1st and runs through December 31st, 2010. That being said, the class will remain open and up on the website so that students can sign up at any point. I have NO plans to take this workshop down. I want it to remain online and accessible to all students.

This is a work at your own pace class!

Pick and choose the prompts as you go! You can do a few or do all of them! Pick and choose any or all of the class techniques and demos-all of the information will be on the site and available for students to access at ANY point after July 1st! I have noticed with the online classes that some students like to do all of the prompts and techniques while other students like to pick and choose what they do. It’s all good! I’m here for you! The workshop material is there for you!

Site will remain up so that students can join the class, have full access to the class and work at their own pace at any time. None of the prompts relate to a specific date. They are labeled with numbers, not dates so that they can be done at any time.

$50 (For a six month class, that’s about $8 a month! $ 0.28 a day!)

This is a “sister” class to “A Life Made By Hand”, though you do not have to take ALMBH to take Memories and Reflections. This class will be set up in somewhat of a similar way (though we are no longer going to be on a ning board). You will have full access to videos, pdf files, collage sheets and all workshop information 24/7. I am available to answer any questions, help you along, nurture, guide and be your art “you can do it” cheerleader!

This is a brand new, spanking, hot off the presses, oozing with artsy goodness online class!

You will learn two different bookbinding structures and forms (see the photos above). These books can be made in ANY size. They are the perfect structures for on the go art journaling! (Combined with a small bag of ephemera, a glue stick and a favorite pen, you’re ready!) I will show you different tips, tricks and techniques for binding the books from scratch. Bookbinding tutorials come complete with PDF files and videos! Those of you who have taken bookbinding workshops with me know that I stress FUN and EASE with bookbinding. My attitude has always been, if I can do it, you can do it!

I have developed OVER thirty NEW collage prompts. These are composition/design techniques disguised as fun collage templates. Use the templates to give you an idea as to how to move your papers and images around the page. You can use handmade papers, found ephemera, junk mail, decorative/paper tape, stickers, labels, etc… whatever you have on hand! Think of these prompts as a next step to the prompts that were in A Life Made By Hand.

I will walk you through and demo not only how to bind the book, but several different tips, tricks and techniques with collage and journaling. I will demo and give ideas on how to create fold out pages, hidden flaps, pockets, tabs and more. I will give you ideas on how to find images and use them in your journal! I will have you keeping your eyes open for free and found art materials that are all around you!

In addition to the bookbinding and collage techniques/demos/handouts, you will also receive a pdf file (on our class site) with 184 journal writing prompts. These are not your run of the mill, find on the internet type prompts! These are some of my favorite writing techniques and ideas to get you excited about working in your journal. There are personal prompts and every day prompts. NONE of the prompts relate to a specific date (for example, no Christmas prompts on December 25th) so they are prompts that everyone can enjoy and relate to! These are prompts guaranteed to get you writing. None of the prompts are dated either, but numbered, so you can go through and pick one as you work.

What else? You will have access to a wealth of information! I like to make my classes accessible to everyone from beginner to advanced! I like to offer my students more than just what they think they are getting! I am a firm believer in art being accessible and available to EVERYONE. I’ve set up the class so that you can work at your own pace. Do a page a day, do pages over a weekend, whenever it suits you. This is a work at your own pace class (as are all of my classes)! I don’t believe in taking long periods of time to create a journal page, nor do I believe that art should be stressful. All of the prompts are easy, fun and geared for all levels of artists (beginner to advanced).

I believe in hands on work! Yes, you will learn from me. Yes, you will learn from what your fellow students do. You will learn best from working in your journal, working hands on utilizing the techniques shown in this class!

The class is set up in an easy to navigate manner! Everything is extremely easy to navigate and find (one of the reasons why I moved my classes off of ning).

All information on how to get on the board is sent usually within 24 hours (often times, less than that!). Please provide any additional information if you’d like me to use an email address other than what your paypal address is!

What you get-

184 prompts and more-one a day for six months (already on the site)

38 collage templates (turn the collage templates in different directions and you get even MORE collage templates! The possibilities are endless!)

Journaling isn’t about pretty pages. It isn’t about creating a work of art, either. It’s about learning and exploring who you are. It’s about blending the idea of an artist’s sketchbook/workbook, self exploration and introspective diary keeping. It’s any and all of those things, and so much more.

It is a journal class, yet it’s similar to all of my classes where the classes aren’t just techniques that you can use in one single form of art but in every form of mixed media art. It’s a hodge podge of a class-a mix of this and that. Students will receive a handout that has daily prompts for six months- they can take that idea and create a page (or even a scrapbook page, or an atc or canvas or any kind of mixed media project) in 15 minutes or less. The site where the prompts are posted will be loaded with photos, information, ideas, tips, tricks and techniques. It’s going to be a wealth of information. It’s journaling but I will also be focusing on teaching a plethora of collage techniques, demos and instructions in the class. The collage ideas that I like to offer are design and composition tips, tricks and techniques disguised as FUN collage pages (that will push and prod even the most experienced collage artist). The journal prompts aren’t your average run of the mill writing prompts either. They are designed to make you think and to dive deep. I want them to relate to everyone and not just a handful of people. It’s meant to be a fun class that anyone can do at any time. It’s great if you can do a page a day, if not, the information is available for you to download and work at your own pace. It’s not meant to be hard or to have any pressure. It’s meant to inspire, nurture and encourage.

What you get-

181 prompts and more-one a day for six months (already on the site)

25 collage templates (turn the collage templates in different directions and you get even MORE collage templates! The possibilities are endless!)

Tips, Tricks, Ideas, and Inspiration

Seven instructional videos

Journal pages from me that you won’t see anywhere else!

Yes! There are TWO tutorials on creating your own journals for the class.

What do you need?

A Journal

a glue stick (I like coccoina, avery, scotch-anything labeled permanent)

a favorite pen-mine are: Sakura gelly roll glaze, Sakura Souffle, Latte and sweets pens, Zig Vellum and Writer pens, Faber Castell Pitt Pens (brush stroke, black), Sharpie Poster Paint pens (water based), Micron pens, uniball signo…you do not need all of these! Just a pen that will write on paint and paper!

Guess what? You all have a second chance to win Juliana Coles’ Field Notes: A Book of Reminders!  There are two price packages for the class and this drawing is for the basic package.

Click on this image to read about Juliana's class

Join an expedition team of Visual Journalists on a Summer Art Tour and learn to combine notes from the field with a sketchbook of sorts while creating a book of reminders that begins with your own imagery. This unique book will become your constant traveling companion: an enlightened witness to your remarkable journey. Create on site: while vacationing, camping, picnicking, with friends at a cafe, alone in a restaurant, in your own backyard, at a store, a gallery, anywhere you can go, your extreme journal as testament to the journey, will travel with you. Simple drawings, collages, mixed media, writings and observations will be the foundation for your Extreme Visual Journaling process when you return to the studio to deepen the experience.

You don’t have to be a world traveler to see the world: it is right in your own backyard, or on your front porch, or out your window, down the street, at your favorite cafe, or pressed between the pages of a sketchbook as extreme visual journal. It’s time to get out of the studio, workshop, or home office and take a field trip with your “Journal Mobil Unit.” You won’t need a lot of mixed media materials but you will require a basic Sketching/Journaling tool kit that will contain your book as well as a few supplies. Each Journalist’s day tripping kit will be different. You will love how these quick notes and sketches become intricate Extreme Visual Journal pages as I give you the tools to complete these gestural images with creative assignments aimed at guiding you to explore your personal mythology.

The drawing will be held at midnight on Friday Aug 9, 2010 for this winner.

Ooooh…. today we have TWO prizes you can enter to win!

L.K. Ludwig is so sweet she donated two of her classes!

The first one is called Backlog

Most of us have photos stored on our computers and hard drives that would be marvelous printed out and placed in our journals- interesting, worthwhile images from the past year or two that deserve to see the light of day.  Take your backlog of images into your journal and create warmth and heart on your journal pages.

It would be fun to go through working with this backlog with company!

Here’s what we’ll do:

  • make a journal using this binding:

(of course, you could skip this part. But, this binding is easy and prepping the paper is just too fun.)

  • tackling a backlog- tips for approaching a daunting task
  • choosing images for your journal en masse
  • tweaking images, changing images for later use
  • ways of including written journaling in retrospective that doesn’t feel stilted and has some richness, other approaches to written content
  • weekly prompt for searching your photo pool
  • video of me adding the photos you see above to my journal pages so you can see the “how” of my thought process for getting the images onto pages
  • weekly technique for altering/enhancing/manipulating a photo inside a journal- using photos from that pile you see above
  • regular views of my journal as I add to, work on, journal around my journals
  • explanations of why I have done what to an image and what content the process used adds to the photo
  • motivational support via tricks, quotes, links, and ideas
  • private facebook group for posting images and providing support for getting those images out of cyberspace and into journal space.
  • a free subscription to Point & Shoot Journaling: Daily Inspirations

There are currently forty posts in place for our six week class, with a few more posts to come!   The class has no set end date- meaning you can take this class at any time and take as long as you like.

Access to the class will remain open to you !!! (indefinitely. as in a really long time….) This open access allows you to work at your own pace, and should relieve any worries you may have about “keeping up” or “getting done.”  Should I decide to ever pull the class access, you will be given 90 days notice.

And, the second on is a class called The Camera in Your pocket.

A camera only makes images when you use it.  It doesn’t make images when it is sitting in a drawer, on a table, in a bag.  A camera doesn’t take photographs when it is at home and you are out.  A camera that is with you is the most useful, best, most exciting creative tool you can have.  For me, the camera that is perpetually in my pocket is my iPhone.

With my iPhone, not only do I have my camera in hand, I have the software to edit, alter, enhance, and upload images in the palm of my hand – using a computer measuring just 2.25 x 4.25 x 0.25 inches- a computer that also happens to be my phone, iPod, video camera, internet browser, calendar, alarm clock, radio, phone book, bookstore, audio recorder…

You probably already know, I’m sure, that I love my iPhone.  Specifically, I love my iPhone camera and the many photography apps that are available. I have had a number of requests for a class around using the iPhone camera; I’m tickled to say- let’s do it!

THE CAMERA IN YOUR POCKET:

Here’s what we’ll cover-

  • helpful info to use the iPhone camera to its fullest- the little quirks, the lens, the shutter release
  • choosing and using apps- there are editing apps, altering apps, and apps that add features to your camera
  • specifically we’ll look at these apps:
    • CameraBag
    • Lo Mob
    • Classic Toy
    • Classic Pan
    • Classic Insta
    • Hipstamatic
    • Tilt Shift Generator
    • Time Lapse
    • Foto Timer
    • Crop Suey
    • PS Mobile
    • Perfectly Clear
    • Film Lab
    • PhotoGene
    • Double Exposure
    • Toy Camera
    • Old Camera
    • Polarize
    • Pano
    • Lomo
    • Format 126
    • MonoPhix
    • AutoAdjust
    • FotoMuse
    • FilterFx
    • SwankoLab
    • and a couple more….
  • how it edit and crop
  • layering
  • tripod mount options and add-on toys equipment(yes, there are add-on lenses!)
  • photography tips
  • weekly photo prompts or photo-art journal assignments related to the apps
  • weekly photo manipulation (app usage) assignments
  • looks at iPhone images from my own portfolio
  • links to inspiring work, useful reviews and helpful information
  • a free subscription to Point & Shoot Journaling: Daily Inspirations

You will need to have a working, connected iPhone, second generation or newer.  Some apps will only work 3G+.  I am shooting on a 3Gs.  Your computer & internet access should be of sufficient speed that you are able to watch videos online, and you should be able to use iTunes to acquire apps that you may need or want. The apps typically range in price from free to $2.99.  (Be aware that jailbroken iPhones may not be able to access iTunes to purchase the apps.)

I will form a private facebook page so that you can post images and have a discussion forum for iPhone photo class conversation.

There are already over sixty posts ready for you for this six-to-eight week class.

Access to the class will remain open to you !!! (indefinitely. as in a really long time….) This open access allows you to work at your own pace, and should relieve any worries you may have about “keeping up” or “getting done.”  Should I decide to ever pull the class access, you will be given 90 days notice.

Tomorrow come back for a drawing for TWO classes by the generous and talented L.K. Ludwig.

UPDATE: Madelin was the winner of Lani’s class. Congratulations, Madelin and a huge thanks to Lani for donating the class.

This is day 1 of our seven days of giveaways!!  We start the fun off with a class donated by Lani Gerrity of  Lani Puppetmaker. com.  She is giving away her Fotoshop Fun Class.

Click this image to go to Lani's site and read more

The eCourse for playing with photo manipulation programs is ready to go, the “class room” is ready for players, photographers, artists and non-linear learners.  Along with various Photoshop programs, we have been working with the share-ware (free) program gimp with great success.   The new course will begin on September 6.

My approach is definitely a bit non-linear.  I don’t learn in a linear way, I love experimentation and play, so that is also the way I love to teach.  I have found plenty of good, solid, linear type tutorials and links for those who would like that too, so no worries.  One thing I have noticed in my exploration of various photo-manipulation techniques is that if I find images I really like, the learning is much easier for me.  So that is the key to this course.  We will be using the images we love.  My intention with this course is that we get inspired by these images and that our inspiration will lead us to learn more about our various programs with greater ease.

As part of the course we have a blog, a yahoo group which allows us to discuss our struggles and triumphs in real time, and we also have a flickr group where we can share images easily.  Hope to see you in the course really soon.  If you are interested there’s a TOP SECRET discount button for blog readers over on the column to the right.  (The new Resilience Art class will be starting at the same time, so you can sign up for two for the price of one or just one for half price!)

The new session begin’s September 6, 2010 and runs for 4 weeks with an additional four weeks of coaching and play.

The drawing will be held at midnight on Friday Aug 6 2010 for this winner.

Tomorrow come back for a drawing for Juliana Coles’ class, Field Notes: A Book of Reminders

Today sets of the beginning of  SEVEN days of giveaways and fun!!  Beginning tomorrow, I will be offering a free class give away donated by artists whose classes are listed on this site.  You will have many chances to win a class!

But today, we are starting off this exciting week with a wonderful conversation with the awesome Pam Carriker who teaches one of the most highly reviewed classes here.

Pam is a great artists and apparently a wonderful teacher, although I can’t say I’ve taken a class from her.  She teaches a very popular Art Journaling class called Journal 365 which is a year long class.  You can find our listing of that class here.

Here is my interview with Pam:

CC:  Your Journal 365 course is very popular, and I want to ask you about that, but first, would you tell us how you first got started teaching classes online?

Pam:  I’d been kind of wanting to do it as a way to teach while still being at home for my family and then was asked to teach through Creative Workshops and that seemed a perfect way to go. I was able to focus on the lessons and videos  and not have the worries of running the website itself.

CC:  Do you teach classes in person as well?

Pam:  Yes! I’m going to be teaching at a couple of big retreats next year as well as some smaller venues and even going to Paris to teach with Lisa Bebi and Renee Richetts in December of 2010. I very much want to expand my teaching to larger, live, venues.

CC:  If so, how are the two venues (is that the right word?) different?

Pam:  With online workshops the student is able to go over the materials at their own pace, even replaying the lesson as often as they like. The classes are more affordable than traveling to a workshop or retreat. With a live venue the student is able to meet the teacher and watch them work IRL and ask questions, establish a connection, and connect with other artists. Both venues have many benefits and often a combination of the two is extremely beneficial.

CC:  Judging from the reviews our readers have posted on your classes, you are a very popular teacher and your material is well loved, as well.   What do you enjoy about teaching?

Pam:  I’ve taught in many different areas, from pre school to K-7th grade Art and have often felt I missed my calling in not becoming a certified teacher. By teaching and sharing my love for art I’m able to combine those two things. I love the planning of a class as much as delivering it. It’s extremely satisfying to see that ‘Aha’ moment when things click for someone and their art takes off in a new direction. I’ve been very proud to see some of my class participants go on to become published and achieve their own art goals.

CC:  Okay, Journal 365…. How did the idea for this course come about?

Pam:  I wanted to develop a class that went beyond just learning techniques but would present a new lesson each month and then encourage the participants to explore that lesson further, motivation them to create on a daily basis. A place where knowledge and inspiration would be shared with each other. I wanted the lessons to be fresh each month, and base them on what I’m currently working with and on so they are up to date with no limits on what will be covered or which direction the class may go.

CC:  What has been your most memorable experience from teaching this course?

Pam:  While I was trying to set up the first live chat I realized we had people from all over the world participating and coming up with a time to chat that everyone could take part in is no easy feat! The online world can seem so small and so big at the same time!!

CC:  Has the course gone the way you envisioned it?  Or have there been serendipitous things along the way?

Pam:  Serendipitous! I actually had a lesson planned for this month and then my article ‘Basic Black’ came out in Art Journaling and several people asked if I’d teach a lesson on that so I scrapped my other lesson for another time and went with the flow. I think it mirrors true journaling when you structure a class in this way.

CC:  Do you have any new courses in the working?

Pam:  I’m working on instructional videos for an art product company that will come out sometime in 2011, so that along with the monthly videos for this workshop is enough to keep me busy for the time being. I will start to plan a new online workhshop in 2011.

CC:  Do you have any tips for other teachers, who might learn from your success?

Pam:  All of my workshops focus on learning a process, not on creating a product so they all are taught in an Art Journaling format which provides a worry-free playground to try out new techniques and encourages experimentation while documenting growth. Go your own way with your teaching materials and style of teaching. People sign up to take classes from people who’s work they like so that is what you should teach. I try to focus on presenting material straight from my heart and don’t hold back on sharing. If you’re hesitant and not sure you want to give away your ‘secrets’ teaching may not be for you. I didn’t look at how others were teaching workshops; I focused inward and asked what I would want from an online class. Everyone has their own ideas on whether or not to have written materials available for download etc because of the worry of sharing materials with those not paying for the class. I do make them available because I feel it’s very helpful to the students and the benefits outweigh the risks.

CC:  Aside from teaching, I know you do awesome paintings.  Do you regularly art journal, also?

Pam:  Oh yes! I journal nearly every day. This past year has been extremely busy with writing my first book along with everything else. Most of the time the only ‘me’ art time I get is journaling so it has become even more of a guarded passion with me.

CC:  What other media do you dabble in, if any?

Pam:  I love to sketch and recently spent quite a bit of time re-discovering the Conte Crayon. I hadn’t played with them since Art Class in high school. I love to focus on a simple medium and then watch it grow as I combine it with other things I love.

Thank you, Pam, for granting us this glimpse of you, your style and your teaching.  At Pam’s website you can find her art, her classes and her blog.  You can also find her on Facebook here and photos of her art here.

Check back tomorrow for the first of our great giveaways – Fotoshop Fun by Lani Gerrity!!!!

August is a month to celebrate our new site. I will be launching a monthly feature where I will be posting interviews with the artists who teach online classes. Our first interview will be with Pam Carriker, so I’ know you’ll want to check back for that. And we have some great goodies to give away!

Thanks to so many of you who have sent us classes that we had missed. I’ve almost got them all entered, but still have a few to go. I appreciate every one of you who has spread the word about the site. I hope it will be a place everyone can come and find out about available classes so they can choose the one they want to take. I’m so pleased at all the help and encouragement you’ve all provided.

So, come back August 1st and see the fun and prizes we have in store for you!
